Tiny Joy

We’ve all heard the expression “unbridled joy.” So why put a bridle on it? Joy often feels like something wild and fleeting — a free-spirited firework or a fairy you can’t quite catch. When we want it, it’s nowhere to be seen, and when it comes, it passes quickly.

But maybe joy isn’t always about the big, macro moments. Maybe joy is gentler, humbler — something we can nurture in small, everyday ways.

Micro-Joy
Joy doesn’t always need to be dramatic or overwhelming. It can live in:

  • A hand holding yours

  • A shy smile

  • A crisp morning breeze

  • A dog’s greeting

  • A burst of laughter at home

By tending to these tiny sparks, we can weave joy into daily life instead of waiting for grand gestures.

Boundaries + Joy
Boundaries aren’t just about saying no — they’re about saying yes to what matters. Every no creates space for a yes.

  • Say no to washing up → say yes to sitting in the garden with the birds.

  • Say no to one more email → say yes to a warm bath.

Boundaries open doors for joy to enter.

 Joy & the Nervous System
When we pause, breathe, and look around with curiosity, we activate the ventral vagal state of the nervous system. This is where connection, play, and joy live. Sobriety clears the way for us to access this more often — because real joy requires presence.

The Myth of Alcohol & Joy
The world tells us: “Without alcohol, you’ll never connect or have fun again.”
The truth? Joy is our birthright. To feel it fully, we need our brains online, our nervous system regulated, and our hearts open. Sobriety doesn’t take joy away — it makes more of it possible.

How to Cultivate Joy

  • Be curious.

  • Notice how things feel — update what truly brings you joy now.

  • Slow down.

  • Put everything on your planner, then take a third off.

  • Look around — really see your environment.

  • Identify joy glimmers (a cosy chair + soft blanket + favourite music). Stack up the senses.

  • Keep a Joy List (lighter than gratitude, focused on play and pleasure).

  • Spread it around — joy grows when shared.
